Citizenship Program
Hosting citizenship classes is a way to serve immigrant neighbors by supporting Legal Permanent Residents in their final step towards making the United States their home.
Why a Citizenship Class?
In order to become a naturalized citizen, permanent residents who file their applications for citizenship are required to attend a complex interview. Unless they meet age and residency requirements, they are interviewed in English and are expected to read and write in English as well.
Furthermore, they must know 100 facts about the history and political institutions of the United States. Even a native English speaker born in the United States would struggle to pass this test.

Citizenship classes prepare lawful permanent residents with beginning to intermediate English skills for the naturalization interview by teaching the skills needed to successfully complete the naturalization process and maneuver the culture, customs and institutions of the United States of America.
What does a Citizenship Class look like?
The Citizenship Class is a 12 week curriculum. It is volunteer/teacher friendly. Each week comes with a powerpoint presentation, script for teaching, and ideas for games and dialogue to reinforce the concepts taught. By the end of the course, students will feel confident and prepared for the citizenship interview.
